There are many sites still alive..
as an example I can tell you two sites ueuo.com & 110mb.com
I'm using it from last 3-4 years and still they are going very strong..you can see the alexa rank :)

So you would use a free host more than paying for hosting?

Whats saying that the free host you go with is not gonna shut its doors in a week , month or a year if there up that long, there is way too many free hosts around that are here one day and gone the next and you love all your hard work.

Only way i will use a free host is for Proxy sites or some one that is well known and i know they have the money to keeo the free host alive.

Why not ? I'm with one free host for last 3 years who offered me free domain and hosting 1GB of space because of my content and participation on their forums. So i'll continue staying on free profressional hosting as long as i can manage community participation.

Yeah, I with you. I was searching for some stuff related to free hosting and there I came across some of the sites that are providing some really good services along with free web hosting. If you are in need of it then you should spend some more time on your search and get benefited.

Are there any sites out there that are free, fast, and don't put dumb advertisements or banners? I use 000space.com, but I ave to fill out a survey each month to continue my hosting with them. I'd prefer to join a hosting company, and then be done communicating them unless I absolutely have to.

Yeah there are some sites that match to your requirements but I am not sure about what conditions do you have to fulfill for that. You have to search a lot for that.
