Comparison between SEO and SEM

Hi guys. Can you differentiate between SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and (Search Engine Marketing)? It seems that they are the same thing to me. Are they synonyms? Or is just another way of marketing?

SEO means search engine optimization and SEM is search engine marketing.SEO stuffs are like link building,link exchange.And SEM is placing banners onto site.
